Moving to a Smaller Home: What to Do Before, During, and After

Moving to a smaller home forces a series of decisions that most people prefer to postpone: what to keep, what to donate, what to put in storage. Done thoughtfully, a move to a smaller home is one of the most effective opportunities to simplify and improve how you live.

Before the move: reduce before you pack

The single most important thing you can do is reduce the number of items you own before packing them. Every item you move costs time, money, and storage space in the new home. Go through each room and sort items into four groups: Keep, Donate or sell, Dispose of, and Uncertain. Start with the easiest categories: the kitchen junk drawer, the back of the wardrobe, the garage, the medicine cabinet.

Measure the new home before moving furniture

Before moving day, measure every room in the new home, including doorways and hallways. Confirm that your existing furniture will physically fit. In a smaller home, some existing furniture will not fit. It is easier to sell or donate these pieces before the move than to bring them and find nowhere useful to put them.

During the move: label by room and zone

When packing, label each box with the room it belongs in and a general description of contents. Avoid miscellaneous boxes. If items do not have a clear destination, that is a sign they should be reconsidered before moving day.

After the move: settle one room at a time

Resist the urge to unpack everything immediately. Begin with the bedroom and kitchen. Live in the space for two to four weeks before deciding where permanent storage will go. Your actual daily habits will reveal where items naturally belong better than any floor plan can predict.

Accept that some things will not fit

Moving to a smaller home requires accepting that some items may need to be replaced or removed. It is usually easier to let go of furniture than to live around it.
